Recently, our visiting professor Dr. Georgios Karalis was invited to speak at the PEN@ Hydropower Cost Action event in Malta, joining experts Roberto Renato Stopar, Daniel Patauner and Marko Hočevar in a discussion on Education - Knowledge and skills for future hydropower.

During his presentation, Dr. Georgios introduced the clean and renewable energy education programs offered by ICARE, EUREC and his home university NTUA, emphasizing their active role in advancing hydropower education.

He highlighted a critical paradox while Hydropower remains one of the most significant renewable energy sectors worldwide as global employment data (REN21) show, it plays only a minor role in academic training worldwide.

"It is time to consider that the energy transition isn’t just about innovation—it’s about integration," he noted. "Hydropower, and particularly hydro-pumped storage, is a critical piece of that puzzle.

PEN@Hydropower is a network to establish a Pan-European network for a sustainable, digitalised Hydropower contributing to the Clean Energy Transition (CET) and funded by the European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST). This united network of researchers, engineers, scholars, and other stakeholders aims to facilitate close collaboration among European research groups through projects supporting sustainable Hydropower.
